Report: Oct 2: Marista Catholic School
Kindergarden StudentsLast Monday Team Bolivia toured the Marista School in south Santa Cruz, a public school administered by a local catholic church. The facilities at Marista are remarkable ... with new classrooms and landscaping. Parent and student involvement is apparent in every aspect of the school. The school yard is maintained by students as a science project; in fact, a group of students was planting a tree in the yard and another student was watering the bountiful garden while the tour was in progress.

Parents work in the classroom and the cafeteria. At left, two students are playing with the face they constructed with parent help.

The cafeteria at the school provides employment for local families. Well stocked food shelves (photo at right) contain a variety of local snacks cooked in the kitchens of parents in the local community. Mothers staffed the school cafeteria, which looked like a country kitchen that would elicit the envy of Martha Steward. The Team Bolivia was warmly greeted and given a choice of home cooked goods!

Marista has recently received computers and has established a computer lab for the students so that basic computer training will begin soon. Team Bolivia was informed that obtaining the telephone service to complete the connection to the Internet may take months. However, since the school is part of the Minga Digital program, it may be possible to speed up this process.
